๐๏ธ National Workforce, Skills & Competency Standards
Supporting Workforce Development Through Evidence-Based Clinical Education
VeneHaemo recognises that effective clinical education forms part of a wider system of workforce development, competency, professional standards, patient safety and clinical governance.
Our training is designed to support organisations in developing a workforce with the appropriate knowledge, skills, professional behaviours and practical competence required for their role.
Where relevant to the programme and learner's role, VeneHaemo's training can be informed by and mapped against appropriate national workforce frameworks, competency standards, professional requirements and local organisational policies.
Our educational approach recognises relevant resources and frameworks from organisations including:
- Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)
- GOV.UK
- NHS England
- Skills for Care
- Skills for Health
- NHS workforce development and education frameworks
- Care Workforce Pathway
- Care Certificate standards
- Relevant professional and regulatory standards
- Local organisational competency frameworks
- Clinical governance and quality-improvement frameworks
The Care Workforce Pathway provides a national framework describing the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours required across adult social care roles and supports workforce development and progression.
The Care Certificate standards provide a recognised framework for the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of health and social care workers.
VeneHaemo uses these national resources as appropriate to inform the design and contextualisation of relevant training, alongside evidence-based clinical guidance and the requirements of the organisation commissioning the training.
VeneHaemo is an independent training provider and is not an NHS England, DHSC, GOV.UK, Skills for Care or Skills for Health training provider unless specifically stated for an individual programme.
๐ฏ From Workforce Development to Clinical Competence
At VeneHaemo, we believe effective training should progress beyond simply acquiring knowledge.
Our educational model follows:
KNOWLEDGE
Understanding evidence, rationale and clinical principles.
SKILLS
Developing safe and effective practical technique.
PRACTICE
Applying the skill through supervised hands-on learning.
FEEDBACK
Receiving guidance, correction and opportunities for reflection.
ASSESSMENT
Demonstrating knowledge and practical performance where assessment forms part of the programme.
COMPETENCE
Developing the ability to apply learning appropriately within the individual's role and scope of practice.
SAFE PRACTICE
Translating learning into appropriate clinical practice within the employing organisation's governance framework.
๐ฉธ Better Technique. Better Specimens. Better Patient Care.
VeneHaemo has a particular focus on the relationship between clinical technique, specimen quality and patient safety.
Poor blood-sampling technique can contribute to pre-analytical errors, including haemolysis and unsuitable specimens, potentially resulting in specimen rejection, delays or repeat sampling.
Our training therefore emphasises:
๐ฉธ Correct Clinical Technique
๐งช Better Specimen Quality
๐ก๏ธ Patient Safety
๐ฌ Pre-Analytical Quality
๐ Reliable Laboratory Processes
๐ Quality Improvement
โค๏ธ Better Patient Experience
Our aim is to help healthcare professionals understand why quality matters at the point of collection, not simply how to perform a procedure.
๐ฌ Evidence-Based Clinical Education
VeneHaemo is committed to providing education informed by current evidence, recognised professional standards, relevant clinical guidance and best-practice principles.
Training may incorporate principles relating to:
- Evidence-based clinical practice
- Patient safety
- Infection prevention and control
- Sharps safety
- Safe use of clinical equipment
- Pre-analytical quality
- Specimen integrity
- Haemolysis prevention
- Patient identification
- Patient communication
- Human factors
- Clinical competence
- Professional accountability
- Quality improvement
- Clinical governance
Training can also be adapted, where appropriate, to the clinical environment, equipment, local policies, procedures and competency framework of the organisation commissioning the training.
โ๏ธ Professional & Clinical Governance Framework
VeneHaemo's training is designed to support — not replace — the professional, regulatory and organisational governance arrangements applicable to clinical practice.
Our programmes can support organisations with:
Workforce Development
Developing knowledge and practical skills within the workforce.
Competency Development
Supporting structured learning and assessment where appropriate.
Patient Safety
Promoting safe clinical technique and recognition of avoidable risks.
Clinical Governance
Supporting education, professional accountability, quality improvement and safer systems of practice.
Quality Improvement
Identifying learning needs and opportunities to improve clinical processes.
Local Governance
Working alongside organisational policies, procedures, competency frameworks and equipment requirements.
๐ฅ NHS & Health and Social Care Workforce Alignment
VeneHaemo understands that healthcare organisations have a responsibility to ensure that staff have the appropriate training, knowledge, skills, competence and supervision required for the duties they undertake.
Our training can therefore support workforce development programmes across:
- NHS organisations
- Primary care
- Secondary care
- Community services
- Independent healthcare
- Adult social care
- Universities and education providers
- Clinical research organisations
- Research teams
- Point-of-care testing environments
- Laboratory-related services
- GP practices and PCNs
- Care organisations
Training can be commissioned to address identified learning needs, competency gaps, new equipment, service developments, workforce planning, refresher requirements or quality-improvement priorities.
๐งช Clinical Research & Point-of-Care Practice
VeneHaemo also provides training relevant to clinical research teams, research nurses, healthcare research professionals and point-of-care environments, where appropriate.
Training can support staff involved in the collection of clinical specimens or performance of relevant clinical procedures within an approved research or healthcare setting.
Programmes can be tailored around:
- Research protocols
- Specimen collection
- Capillary blood sampling
- Point-of-care testing
- Pre-analytical specimen quality
- Safe use of equipment
- Infection prevention
- Sharps safety
- Participant/patient communication
- Role-specific competency requirements
All research-related activity remains subject to the applicable research governance, protocol, ethical, regulatory, organisational and professional requirements.
๐ฏ Competency-Focused Training
Clinical competence — not just a certificate.
Where competency assessment forms part of a programme, learners may be required to demonstrate appropriate:
Knowledge + Technique + Practical Application + Safe Practice
against defined learning outcomes or assessment criteria.
However, completion of a VeneHaemo course does not automatically confer competence or authorisation to practise independently.
Clinical competence and authorisation remain the responsibility of the employing or commissioning organisation and must take account of:
- Professional registration
- Scope of practice
- Job role
- Experience
- Local policies and procedures
- Equipment
- Supervision
- Organisational competency frameworks
- Individual performance
- Ongoing practice and reassessment
This distinction ensures that training, competence and authorisation are recognised as related but separate governance processes.
๐ Certificates & CPD Evidence
Following successful completion of the relevant training requirements, delegates may receive a certificate confirming completion/participation and the learning outcomes covered.
Certificates may be retained as part of an individual's CPD and professional development portfolio, subject to the requirements of the relevant professional regulator and employer.
Important
A VeneHaemo certificate:
- Confirms completion of the specified training activity.
- Does not confer professional registration.
- Does not independently authorise clinical practice.
- Does not replace employer competency assessment.
- Does not replace local induction or mandatory training.
- Does not extend an individual's professional scope of practice.
- Does not guarantee employment.
- Does not guarantee regulatory revalidation.
Delegates remain responsible for ensuring that learning is relevant to their professional role, scope of practice and regulatory requirements.
